what do you mean by "It wont work without a Field selected though" ? and please provide a screen shot.
what version of crystal are you using? i'm using 14.1.1.1036 and have no issues adding a running total from the running total expert into a chart.
if you're using a much earlier version of crystal, it could be that it doesn't support this.
