Did you also check to make sure you have your ID assigned to an IT105 and subtype 0001 as well. I imagine this is the actual root cause of the short dump more than actual error handling. You will not be able to test anything on ESS unless you have your ID assigned to a PERNR. You can test this function module in SE37 and see the results.
It should pull back a personnel number number and you can even set a break point on the code (My system already has this note implemented).
And it should output who you have assigned
